Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump is closely monitoring rising tensions between India and Pakistan and has expressed a strong desire to see the situation de-escalate, the White House said in a statement on Friday.
Amid growing concerns over cross-border hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, the White House emphasized that the President is in contact with officials in both countries and is encouraging dialogue and restraint.
“The President has been following the developments closely and is urging both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid any further military escalation,” a senior administration official said. “The United States remains engaged with leaders in the region and stands ready to assist in diplomatic efforts if requested.”
Tensions between India and Pakistan have flared in recent weeks following a deadly incident in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, which both sides have blamed on each other. The exchange of threats and military posturing has raised fears of a broader conflict.
President Trump has previously offered to mediate between the two countries, a proposal that has received mixed reactions in the region. India has traditionally rejected third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue, while Pakistan has welcomed international involvement.
“We are in conversations with both sides,” the official added. “Our goal is to support efforts that reduce tensions and promote peace and stability in South Asia.”
The U.S. State Department has also urged both nations to engage in direct dialogue and avoid actions that could lead to further instability.
The White House reiterated that while the United States considers both India and Pakistan to be key partners in the region, it expects both nations to act responsibly and in the interest of regional peace.
As the situation develops, U.S. officials say they will continue to monitor events and remain in contact with allies and partners to encourage diplomatic solutions.
