Hyderabad, September 7, 2026: The Telangana Urdu Working Journalists’ Federation (TUWJF) will organise a candlelight protest tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8, at 6 pm at the Union office, Old Press Club, Basheer Bagh, to strongly condemn the alleged brutal assault on two Muslim women journalists by Delhi Police.
According to TUWJF President M. A. Majid, the federation is organising the protest to express solidarity with the journalists and demand justice against the alleged high-handedness of Delhi Police.
The protest comes in response to the claims made by journalists Shaheen Khan and Nafisa (Nafeesa) Khan of 4PM News Network. On September 3, the two women alleged that while covering an event attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital in Saket, they were detained, taken to Saket police station, and beaten with sticks and slapped by police personnel. They further claimed the attack intensified after officers discovered their Muslim identity. Videos circulated by them showed visible bruises on their bodies.
Delhi Police have denied the assault charges, stating that the journalists had parked their scooter on a VVIP route, refused to move it despite repeated requests, and were taken to the police station only for enquiry under security protocols. Police described the allegations of violence as “totally false and misleading.”
Several national journalists’ bodies have already condemned the reported incident and demanded a fair probe.
TUWJF has appealed to all journalists, media persons and well-wishers in Hyderabad to join the candlelight protest at Old Press Club, Basheer Bagh, and express solidarity against the alleged attack on press freedom.
