Hyderabad: Montreal experienced a vibrant celebration as the Telugu Association of Montreal (TAM) hosted its first-ever jatara (fair). The event marked a significant milestone for TAM following its official registration as a recognised community platform in Quebec.
The event, celebrated with traditional grandeur, attracted over 250 attendees from Montreal and nearby cities such as Ottawa and Cornwall, fostering an atmosphere of cultural richness and festivity.
The jatara featured a wide array of activities catering to all age groups. Attendees enjoyed competitive games such as carrom board, chess and rangoli, while children participated in drawing contests. Women graced the occasion with traditional dance performances, and activities like kite-making, dart games, and Sankranti-themed decorations captured the festival’s spirit.
Member of Parliament Sameer Zuberi from Dollard-des-Ormeaux (DDO), Montreal, attended the event. He praised the TAM committee for their community efforts and awarded prizes to the winners of the drawing competition. In his speech, Zuberi emphasised the importance of the Telugu community, highlighting the values and cultural richness they bring.
The successful event was a testament to the dedicated efforts of the TAM organising committee — Vyshampayan, Rajiv, Shashi, Saradhi and Sri Divya. The MP commended the team’s work in securing official recognition for the association and establishing it as a vibrant cultural hub in Quebec. The celebration is just the beginning of many community events aimed at fostering unity and preserving Telugu traditions in Montreal.
