Amid escalating tensions with Pakistan, the Government of India has suspended civilian flight operations at 32 airports across northern and western regions. The move, announced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), will remain in effect until 5:29 AM on May 15, 2025.
This strategic decision comes in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, a military operation launched by India on May 7. The operation targeted terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 civilian lives.
List of Airports Affected
The suspension applies to several airports situated near the India-Pakistan border or those with military significance. The list includes:
Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu-Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise, and Uttarlai.
Flight Routes and Airline Impact
Alongside airport closures, 25 air route segments under the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Regions (FIRs) have also been temporarily restricted. This move aims to ensure safety and reduce disruption during this heightened security period.
Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet have canceled or diverted several flights. Travelers are strongly advised to check with their carriers for the latest updates and plan accordingly.
National Security First
Authorities have emphasized that the measures are temporary and precautionary, reflecting India’s firm stance on ensuring national security in the wake of growing cross-border threats.
