Kolkata, June 27, 2025 – A 24-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba neighborhood on the evening of June 25, 2025, sparking widespread outrage across West Bengal. The Kolkata Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the heinous crime, identified as Manojit Mishra (31), a former student and temporary non-teaching staff member, and two current students, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20).
According to the victim’s complaint filed at Kasba Police Station, the assault took place between 7:30 PM and 10:00 PM in a guard room on the college campus. The survivor alleged that the accused filmed the assault and threatened to release the footage, adding to the brutality of the crime. The police have seized the mobile phones of the accused for forensic analysis, and a forensic team is examining the crime scene, which has been sealed. The victim underwent a medical examination at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, and her confidential statement is being recorded before a judicial magistrate.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognizance of the incident, with Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar writing to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, urging a time-bound investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The NCW has demanded a detailed action report within three days and stressed the need for comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal support for the victim, along with compensation under Section 396 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The accused were produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Alipore Court on June 27, where they were remanded to four days of police custody for further interrogation. The incident has drawn sharp criticism, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeting the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya claimed that one of the accused, Manojit Mishra, is a former president of the college’s TMC Chhatra Parishad unit and the current organizational secretary of its south Kolkata wing, alleging that West Bengal has become a “nightmare for women” under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rule. The TMC condemned the incident and commended the police for their prompt arrests, stating that “justice will be served.”
This case has reignited concerns about women’s safety in Kolkata, coming less than a year after the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. Students, faculty, and activists are now questioning the adequacy of safety protocols on college campuses, with protests erupting outside Kasba Police Station by workers of the Congress and the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO).
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities collecting CCTV footage and other digital evidence to build a robust case against the accused. The incident has sent shockwaves through the city, prompting renewed calls for stricter campus security measures and justice for the victim.
