JEDDAH : With an exceptional command of the intricate art of Arabic calligraphy, young Tamil student Afrin Abdul Majeed from Karaikal Tamil Nadu has carved a distinctive place for herself in a traditional art form deeply rooted in Islamic heritage. Her remarkable ability to transform Arabic script into exquisite works of artistic expression earned her an invitation as a special guest to a Holy Qur’an calligraphy exhibition in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where her talent drew considerable admiration from visitors. The exhibition was held on November 6, 2026, at Atham Arts Centre in Jeddah. Afrin, who resides in Jeddah and continues to refine her calligraphic skills, showcased an impressive collection of hand-crafted Arabic calligraphy in diverse styles, including beautifully designed artistic banners. Her creations received an enthusiastic response from Arab visitors, who appreciated the precision, elegance and artistic finesse reflected in her work.
At a time when handwriting is gradually giving way to digital communication, Afrin’s commitment to mastering Arabic calligraphy — an art form steeped in more than a thousand years of cultural and artistic heritage — stands out as a commendable endeavour. In recognition of her passion, perseverance and artistic accomplishments, the organisers presented her with a certificate of appreciation. The exhibition was attended by Sudanese visual artist Salama Al-Harawi and renowned Arabic calligrapher Othman Rahma, among other distinguished personalities. It was organised by Al-Badrul Wathad Al-Faras Zakiya School and Educational Institution. Afrin’s remarkable achievement is a shining testament to the fact that art knows no boundaries of language, ethnicity or nationality. Her equanimity, coupled with passion, perseverance and dedication, has enabled her to excel in the time-honoured tradition of Arabic calligraphy and earn international appreciation, bringing distinction to Tamil Nadu.
