RIYADH: In a stirring call to collective purpose and national ambition, Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, urged the Indian diaspora in Saudi Arabia to play a more proactive role in advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 — a prosperous, self-reliant and globally influential India.
Addressing a large gathering of the Indian community at the International Indian School Riyadh (IISR), the minister underlined the invaluable contribution of Indians overseas to the nation’s growth and aspirations. The community reception was hosted in his honour by the All India Steering Committee under the patronage of the Embassy of India, Riyadh.
Highlighting the profound and enduring role of the Indian expatriate community in strengthening the India–Saudi Arabia partnership, Shri Singh paid tribute to their contributions across trade, investment, energy and culture. He described the diaspora as a “vibrant link” and a vital human bridge that transcends geographical boundaries, serving as living ambassadors of India while partnering in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing transformation.
“You are the vibrant link playing an important role in strengthening and prospering the very old relationship between India and Saudi Arabia,” the minister said. He encouraged expatriates to seize expanding opportunities arising from the Kingdom’s ambitious economic initiatives and to contribute their expertise, enterprise and experience to deepen the mutually beneficial partnership.
Referring to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s earlier description of Indians in Saudi Arabia as “like family,” Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh called on the community to preserve this cherished bond through unity, harmony and cooperation. He also praised the integrity, hard work and dedication of Indians that have earned them lasting trust and respect across the Kingdom.
Reaffirming the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad, the minister highlighted efforts to ensure the safe evacuation and repatriation of students, workers and families during emergencies. During interactions with community representatives, he listened to various concerns and issues facing the diaspora.
Key community concerns and requests raised included:
• A long-standing proposal for an Indian Consulate in the Eastern Province (under consideration, subject to bilateral deliberation).
• Direct flights from Riyadh to Chennai and other Tamil Nadu destinations, as well as to Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Azamgarh (to be examined, subject to commercial viability).
• Additional consular staff to address grievances more efficiently.
• An employment support platform to connect Indian job seekers who have lost employment in Saudi Arabia with Indian companies operating in the Kingdom.
• Delays in passport-renewal appointments.
Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, H.E. Shri Vipul, confirmed that the Embassy is actively working with its partner VFS Global to streamline the passport appointment system, ease bottlenecks and reduce waiting times.
In his welcome address, Ambassador Vipul expressed gratitude for the minister’s presence and commended the Indian community for embodying the spirit of “Unity in Diversity.” The Ambassador, along with Steering Committee Convenor Mr. Zaigham Khan and Bharatiya Samman Award recipients Mr. Shihab Kuttukad and Dr. Anwar Khursheed, welcomed the minister with floral bouquets.
Students of IISR presented vibrant cultural performances celebrating India’s rich heritage under the supervision of Interim Principal Mrs. Mymoona Abbas. Mrs. Tarannum Asif compered the proceedings.
During his four-day official visit that began on Saturday, the minister placed the welfare of Indian workers at the centre of his engagements. He visited the Alfanar Company labour camp, interacted directly with Indian workers, listened to their concerns and gained first-hand insight into their living and working conditions — a gesture reflecting the Government of India’s commitment to the dignity, safety and well-being of its citizens overseas.
Mingling freely with attendees and posing for photographs and selfies, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh was widely appreciated as a true “people’s minister” for his approachable, humble and down-to-earth demeanour. The reception brought together members of the Kingdom’s diverse Indian community and concluded with meaningful interactions and a strong reaffirmation of the enduring India–Saudi relationship.
