Washington DC, June 24, 2025 – In a dramatic turn of events, US President Donald Trump announced a “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran, bringing an end to the intense 12-day conflict that gripped the Middle East. The announcement, made via Trump’s Truth Social platform, came just hours after Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes on the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, escalating tensions in the region.
According to Trump, the ceasefire agreement, mediated with the assistance of Qatar, will see both nations halt hostilities within 24 hours, with Iran initiating the truce followed by Israel 12 hours later. “It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE… for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!” Trump declared, hailing the deal as a historic achievement.
The conflict, dubbed the “12-day war” by Trump, began on June 13 when Israel launched strikes on Iranian military, nuclear, and energy sites, prompting Iran to retaliate with missile and drone barrages. The violence claimed at least 430 lives in Iran and 25 in Israel, with significant damage reported on both sides.
However, the ceasefire’s stability remains uncertain. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz accused Iran of violating the truce shortly after its announcement, ordering “intense strikes” on Tehran in response to detected missile launches. Iran’s state media denied these claims, asserting no missiles were fired post-ceasefire.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while initially denying any formal agreement, later confirmed Tehran’s compliance with the ceasefire, stating military operations ceased at 4 a.m. local time. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also affirmed Israel’s commitment to the truce but warned of forceful retaliation if violated.
Global reactions have been mixed. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the ceasefire, emphasizing the need for diplomacy, while analysts cautioned that fragile truces in the region have historically faltered. Oil prices dropped significantly, with US West Texas Intermediate crude falling 3.7% to $65.9 per barrel, reflecting eased concerns over supply disruptions.
Trump credited the US-led airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as a catalyst for the deal, claiming they “brought everyone together.” He expressed hope that the ceasefire would pave the way for lasting peace in the Middle East.
