Hyderabad, India – November 5, 2025: Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and son of Indian immigrants, has won New York City’s mayoral race, becoming the first Muslim and Indian-American to lead the metropolis. The Ugandan-born Queens assemblyman secured 52.8% of the vote against Andrew Cuomo, per NBC News.
Born in Kampala in 1991 to a Gujarati Muslim family, Mamdani immigrated to NYC at age seven. His “A New York for All” campaign emphasized rent control, childcare, and green jobs, earning support from AOC and Bernie Sanders. Backed by $15 million in grassroots funds, he triumphed with strong Latino, youth, and Asian-American turnout.
“This city gave my family refuge; today, I pledge to be a refuge for every New Yorker,” Mamdani said at his victory rally in Astoria Park.
As mayor, he’ll cap rent hikes at 3% and launch a “Green Deen Initiative.” The win sparks joy in the Indian diaspora, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas tweeting praise and Indian media celebrating.
