Hyderabad: In a glittering ceremony at Raj Bhavan on Friday, former Indian cricket captain and prominent Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin took oath as a minister in the Telangana government. Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administered the oath of secrecy to Azharuddin, marking a significant milestone in his transition from the cricket field to the corridors of power.
The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, several state cabinet ministers, Congress Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Legislative Council (MLCs), Members of Parliament (MPs), and other esteemed guests.
Sources indicate that Azharuddin is likely to be allocated the portfolios of Minority Welfare and Sports & Youth Affairs. His induction into the Revanth Reddy cabinet is being hailed as a positive development within Congress circles, adding a new dynamic to the state administration.
A native of Hyderabad, Azharuddin was born on February 8, 1963. He graduated from Osmania University before making his mark in the world of cricket. Debuting in 1984, he quickly rose to fame with his elegant batting style, finesse, and exceptional leadership. As captain, Azharuddin represented India in 99 Test matches and 334 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), leading the team to several unforgettable victories.
Post-retirement, Azharuddin ventured into politics, securing a Lok Sabha seat from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh on a Congress ticket in 2009. Following the formation of Telangana, he shifted focus to state politics and has been actively involved in recent years, serving as the Working President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC).
Speaking to the media after the swearing-in, Azharuddin expressed his commitment, stating, “I will work with utmost sincerity for the development of the youth and minorities in Telangana. Special emphasis will be placed on promoting sports, creating employment opportunities, and implementing welfare schemes for minorities.”
The Raj Bhavan ceremony also saw the presence of political and social luminaries, alongside several former cricketers who extended their congratulations and best wishes for Azharuddin’s success in his new role.
