JEDDAH: The immortal melodies of legendary South Indian playback singer S. Janaki—a voice that soothed wounded hearts, celebrated love in its purest form, and transcended linguistic and cultural boundaries for decades—reverberated once again, not from the grandeur of a concert hall but through poignant recollections and heartfelt tributes offered by her admirers. Deeply saddened by the irreparable loss of the iconic “Nightingale of South India,” the Jeddah Readers’ Forum dedicated its weekly literary gathering to commemorating her extraordinary life, unparalleled artistry, and enduring musical legacy.
The memorial programme featured an eloquent keynote tribute by renowned social activist Noushad Adoor, who reflected on the incomparable brilliance of a voice that surpassed the limitations of language, geography, and generations to become an eternal symbol of musical excellence.
“Her voice possessed an almost mystical enchantment. Even with one’s eyes closed, it could awaken the deepest emotions of love, longing, joy, and melancholy with remarkable authenticity. By graciously declining the Padma Vibhushan, she demonstrated that unwavering personal conviction and artistic integrity can stand above even the nation’s highest honours. S. Janaki was not merely a singer; she was a rare musical phenomenon who breathed life into every lyric, investing each composition with the very essence of her soul,” he observed.
The gathering was presided over by K.T.A. Muneer, Coordinator of the Jeddah Readers’ Forum, who paid glowing tribute to the legendary vocalist’s immeasurable contribution to Indian music.
In his presidential address, he remarked, “The celestial voice that gently lulled generations to sleep through lullabies overflowing with maternal tenderness became the emotional heartbeat of countless Malayali households. Though she has taken her final bow from the stage of life, that divine resonance will continue to echo through our hearts, our homes, and our most cherished memories for generations to come.”
Several members, including Naser Zain, Mujeeb Muthethath, Prinsad Parayi, Sharafudheen Palakkad, Gafoor Vandoor, Anwar Babu, Ashraf Nilambur, and Siddique Chokkad, also addressed the gathering, expressing profound sorrow over the legendary singer’s passing and paying glowing tributes to an artist whose ethereal voice seemed destined to resonate eternally across the heavens and within the hearts of millions.
