New Delhi, November 12, 2025: In the wake of the devastating car explosion near the iconic Red Fort on November 10, Delhi Police have intensified security measures across the national capital, with relentless checks underway to thwart any potential threats. The blast, which claimed at least 13 lives and injured over 20 others, has sent shockwaves through the city, prompting a multi-agency crackdown on terror networks.
The incident unfolded at 6:52 PM IST near Gate 1 of the Lal Qila Metro Station, when a Hyundai i20 car, laden with ammonium nitrate explosives, detonated while idling at a traffic signal. The powerful blast not only engulfed the vehicle in flames but also damaged six cars, two e-rickshaws, and an auto-rickshaw in the vicinity, shattering windows of nearby buildings and echoing hundreds of meters away. Eyewitnesses described a scene of utter chaos, with the Delhi Fire Services deploying seven tenders to douse the inferno, bringing it under control by 7:29 PM.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken the reins of the investigation, with Delhi Police invoking the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) to probe what appears to be a meticulously planned terrorist strike. Preliminary evidence points to a suicide bombing, bolstered by CCTV footage capturing a masked driver at the wheel, with indications of additional occupants inside the vehicle.
Raids in Faridabad on November 9-10 led to the seizure of a staggering 350 kg and 2,563 kg of explosives, along with weapons and bomb-making paraphernalia from houses rented by suspects. Key figure in the probe is Dr. Umar Mohammed Nabi, a Pulwama-based doctor who owned the explosive-laden car and allegedly pledged allegiance to Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, a Jammu & Kashmir offshoot of Al-Qaeda. Further links have emerged to Jaish-e-Mohammed, with investigators unraveling a sophisticated network involving medical professionals stockpiling explosives for a potential serial bombing spree in Delhi.
Two men have been detained for interrogation, and forensic teams are meticulously sifting through debris at the site. While no group has claimed responsibility, the “writing on the wall” screams JeM involvement, according to security sources.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from Bhutan, condemned the “cowardly act” and vowed that “those behind this conspiracy will not be spared.” “India stands united against terrorism. We will hunt down every perpetrator and ensure justice is swift and severe,” the PM asserted, expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the injured’s recovery.
Home Minister Amit Shah personally visited the blast site and Lok Nayak Hospital, where the injured are receiving top-notch care, assuring the public of a “watertight investigation” and enhanced vigilance nationwide. President Droupadi Murmu, while on a state visit to Angola, sought a detailed briefing on the unfolding developments.
Opposition voices echoed the gravity: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed it “heartbreaking and deeply concerning,” while Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal called it “extremely alarming,” urging collaborative efforts to bolster security.
In response, Delhi Police have placed the city on maximum alert, with intensified foot patrols, vehicle checks at key entry points, and drone surveillance over sensitive landmarks. Major temples, religious sites, and markets are under 24/7 watch, extending to other metros like Mumbai and Kolkata. Similar alerts have been sounded across India, reflecting the government’s zero-tolerance stance on terror.
Globally, condolences poured in from the US, EU, Russia, France, and others, with pledges of solidarity in the fight against extremism. Amid the tragedy, the Press Information Bureau debunked viral misinformation, including recycled images from unrelated incidents, to curb panic.
