New York City: In a breathtaking display of culture, unity, and celebration, Times Square — one of the most iconic destinations in the world — transformed into a resplendent festival ground as the 10th Annual Grand Diwali Celebrations unfolded with unprecedented grandeur. Despite a persistent afternoon rainfall that drenched much of Manhattan, the spirit of Diwali remained untamed. Thousands gathered with unwavering enthusiasm, their joy and festive energy undeterred by the weather. In the midst of this vibrant atmosphere stood Senior Indian Politician Mohammed Khaleequr Rahman, attending as the Special Guest of Honour, invited by the Indian American community and American friends who wished to celebrate this milestone event with distinguished representation from India.
The celebration marked a decade of Diwali at Times Square — an achievement that reflects both the cultural strength of the Indian diaspora and the growing global recognition of India’s traditions. Over the years, this event has evolved into one of the largest and most anticipated Diwali celebrations outside India, drawing New Yorkers and visitors from across the world. With Times Square illuminated by a mix of traditional lights and towering digital screens flashing festive imagery, the bustling crossroads seemed almost to momentarily transform into a cultural extension of India itself.
Adding prestige to the celebration were several dignitaries and accomplished personalities. HE Binaya S. Pradhan, the Consul General of India in New York, presided over the ceremonial highlights, including the recognition of distinguished achievers from diverse fields. His presence underscored the event’s diplomatic and cultural importance. Beside him, Khaleequr Rahman’s participation as a senior leader visiting from India added an emotional connection for the diaspora, many of whom expressed pride in seeing an Indian political leader share the stage on such a global platform. Among other notable attendees were Sanath Chattopadhyay, President of Merck; Anita Srinivasan, CMO – New York; representatives of the renowned Akshaya Patra Foundation; Dr. Sripad Dhawalikar; and several well-known business leaders, cultural influencers, and Indian American community figures who have been instrumental in strengthening Indo-American ties.
As evening approached, Times Square came alive with cultural rhythm. Performances by celebrated artists infused the crowd with excitement. Kunal Lamba, Ashish Kulkarni, DJ Arjun, Anjala Padmanabhan, and the legendary Malkit Singh took turns electrifying the atmosphere with music and dance. Their performances — blending contemporary beats with classical Indian essence — echoed through the towering skyscrapers, energizing the thousands of spectators who stood mesmerized despite the occasional drizzle. The festive lights, the giant LED screens radiating Diwali-themed visuals, and the rhythm of Indian music created a magical experience that felt both global and deeply personal.
Speaking to Indian and American media channels at the event, Khaleequr Rahman expressed his profound joy and admiration for what he described as a “historic moment for the Indian diaspora.” He lauded Smt. Neeta Bhasin, the visionary force behind Diwali at Times Square, and her dedicated team for their tireless efforts in crafting an event of such magnitude and emotional depth. He noted that converting Times Square — one of the busiest public squares in the world — into a grand Diwali celebration was nothing short of remarkable, reflecting years of hard work and unwavering passion.
Rahman also conveyed special appreciation to mainstream and ethnic media houses whose extensive coverage ensured that the beauty of India’s cultural heritage reached millions across the United States and beyond. He emphasized that the media played a vital role in presenting India’s traditions in an authentic and celebratory manner, contributing to greater understanding and appreciation among diverse audiences.
He extended heartfelt congratulations to Neeta Bhasin ji and her exceptional organizing team, adding special mention of dynamic and well-respected Indian American community leader Rajender Dichpally, whose commitment and contribution added tremendous value to the success of the event. Rahman shared that reconnecting with old friends, meeting members of the Indian diaspora, and witnessing their pride in India’s cultural representation made the occasion personally meaningful for him.
Reflecting on the significance of the celebration, Khaleequr Rahman said he felt honored and proud to represent India on such a prominent international stage. He described the event as a powerful symbol of light, hope, and human connection — values at the core of Diwali, celebrated universally irrespective of borders. The evening, he noted, showcased how cultural traditions, when embraced with collective spirit, have the power to bring people together in harmony.
As the night deepened and Times Square continued to glow with festivity, the 10th Annual Grand Diwali Celebration stood out as a brilliant tribute to India’s cultural heritage. With leaders like Khaleequr Rahman standing shoulder to shoulder with the diaspora, and with the unwavering commitment of organizers and artists, the event once again reaffirmed the enduring strength of India’s global cultural footprint.
